Jackson is the largest city in the historically rich county of Amador. There are several historic buildings to see; gift shops, parks, museums, and restaurants are sure to make your visit enjoyable. Jackson was named after Andrew Jackson; an Indian fighter during the early gold rush period. Historic Main Street boasts over forty buildings constructed after the fire of 1862, that burned the new gold rush town to the ground. These scenic "Civil War" era buildings have been well preserved and are a photographic opportunity as well as being an incredible wealth of historic information. You will find the sidewalks in and around Main Street have many bronze plaques laid into them with historic references to buildings and activities of days gone by. The walking tour of Jackson also includes several unique churches.
The nearby Kennedy mine was the first deep-shaft mine in the Mother Lode, with a 4,600-foot drop, the deepest in the United States. Mule carts were used in the 180 miles of underground workings. The total production of the Kennedy Mine was over 35 million dollars. |
